Wondering whether those eggs are going to hatch?
Here’s how to tell the difference between fertilized and unfertilized eggs, based on appearance over time.
✅ What Fresh Eggs Look Like.Right after being laid, eggs are white and rugby-ball shaped.
As time goes on, they slowly become rounder and more spherical.
✅ What a Fertilized Egg Looks Like. After about 2–3 weeks, you should start to see tiny outlines of larvae forming inside.
This is one of the clearest signs that the egg is viable.

❌ What an Unfertilized Egg Looks Like. They often appear misshapen or distorted.
You’ll see dark sediment settling inside the egg.
Over time, that dark sediment will harden and become a solid, dark lump, basically a dead egg.
If you’re ever unsure, just be patient.
Fertilized eggs show clear signs within a few weeks.
